Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Hamza Shahbaz was elected as the new Chief Minister of Punjab province on Saturday.
The PML-Q and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) had announced a boycott of the meeting shortly before sunset in a tumultuous meeting.
In a meeting chaired by Deputy Speaker Dost Muhammad Mazari, Hamza Shahbaz was elected the new Chief Minister of the province with 197 votes, while his rival Chaudhry Pervez Elahi did not get any votes due to boycott.
The election of Hamza Shahbaz as Chief Minister and the uproar in the meeting were discussed on Pakistani social media throughout the day.
Journalist Asif Shehzad wrote sarcastically on Hamza’s election as Chief Minister, “Father is the Prime Minister, son is the Chief Minister, very high, very high.”
It should be noted that Hamza is the son of Prime Minister of Pakistan Shahbaz Sharif and nephew of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
Criticizing the PML-N, PTI leader Timur Khan Jhagra said that Shahbaz Sharif would be the Prime Minister, Hamza Shahbaz the Chief Minister, President Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari the Foreign Minister. He called it ‘Old Pakistan’.
“Democracy is really the best revenge and the vote is respected,” he wrote sarcastically.
“Today is a sad day for democracy,” the Pakistani anchorperson wrote, referring to the fighting in the Punjab Assembly.
“What happened in the Punjab Assembly today will be remembered as a tragic day in the history of Pakistan,” he wrote.
While the quarrels in the assembly and family politics were criticized, some users also liked Hamza Shahbaz’s speech.
Mina Gabina wrote in a tweet that “Hamza Sharif raised the issue of motorway rape case and how the victims are blamed.”
He further said, “I am happy that a man from Punjab is taking interest in this matter.”
During the meeting, the injury of Chief Ministerial candidate Pervez Elahi was also discussed on social media.
Ali Mohammad Khan, a former PTI minister, wrote in a tweet: “What happened in the Punjab Assembly or what is happening now is not democracy. I am very sorry that Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi was injured.
On social media, some people have been posting videos of the quarrel in the assembly and claiming that Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi started the quarrel by blocking unrelated persons in the house.
It is a matter of Punjab and how is it possible that the name of former Chief Minister of Punjab Usman Bazdar was not mentioned.
Fehmida Yusuf wrote in a tweet that “everyone is posting the one whose arm is broken and no one cares about the one whose heart is broken.”
It should be noted that Chaudhry Pervez Elahi has blamed the newly elected Chief Minister Hamza Shahbaz for the violence against him.
